Md Zaki Othman breaks down on hearing the judgment

KUALA LUMPUR: A FORMER senior official of Sime Darby broke down in court yesterday after he was slapped with a 27-year jail sentence and fined a total of RM894,400 for five counts of graft.
Former Sime Darby general manager of operations Md Zaki Othman, 50, could not believe it when Sessions judge Ahmad Zamzani Mohd Zain ordered that the sentences run consecutively.
Zamzani said Zaki's defence was a mere denial and his alibi "insincere, nonsensical and unacceptable".
The judge also highlighted the defence's failure to dispel the statutory presumption that the watch and the furniture received by Zaki as bribes.
Zaki, who was based in Pasir Gudang, Johor, was charged at the Johor Baru Sessions Court on Jan 3, 2011, with two counts of receiving RM33,600 in bribes in the form of furniture purchased from Europe Asia Furniture Expo Sdn Bhd and accepting a Rolex watch worth RM21,700 from a contractor, which were inducements to approve and expedite payments for projects.
On Jan 13 in the same year, he was charged at the Sessions Court here with two counts of soliciting bribes in the form of an IWC and Hoblot watches worth RM32,980 and RM60,000 respectively from a contractor between March 13 and 15, 2009.
The branded watches were inducements to secure a Letter of Award for the Kumang & Tangga Barat Cluster Development Project.
On the same day at the Shah Alam Sessions Court, he was also charged with soliciting a bribe in the form of a sofa set, a Dossier dining marble set and a Cleopatra chair worth RM30,600 as an inducement to obtain a Letter of Intent dated Jan 11, 2007, from the same contractor as tender for a project worth RM23.9 million.
